Alameda County Pilot Project:  Project Findings

The Alameda County Pilot Project

The primary purpose of the Alameda County Pilot Project was to pilot test a Tracking System in a small scale.  Aspects of Tracking that we tested included integrating multiple existing data sets, using smoothed mapping techniques, and examining the best ways to disseminate information from a Tracking System.

These demonstration web pages are one method we are exploring to disseminate Tracking information in a manner that is useful and responsive to the Pilot Project Advisory Group's recommendations.  Lessons learned from this pilot project will be used to inform the implementation of a future Tracking System, including lessons on how to best disseminate information generated by the system.

This website is currently in demonstration format.  Web content and text associated with the figures and/or downloadable materials may change in the upcoming weeks.  CEHTP welcomes all questions and comments about how to make this information more understandable and useful.

Summary of Findings

The project examined birth outcomes, a range of asthma indicators, and traffic pollution for Alameda County using data for 2001.  These categories were selected based on the a number of factors, including availability of data, ability to demonstrate Tracking principles, relevance to the community, and relevance to environmental health.

Overall, the pilot project demonstrated the ability of a Tracking System to identify elevated rates of health outcomes at the community-level.  We were also able to identify disparities in rates by race/ethnicity, median income, and geography, as well as to demonstrate an association between asthma-related emergency room visits and a traffic pollutant.   Click below for details about the results from each of our project components.

Our Advisory Group also emphasized the importance of examining environmental health information in a socioeconomic context.  Our partnership with Urban Strategies Council to incorporate some of the pilot project findings into their interactive web GIS/data warehouse demonstrates how data intermediaries can play an important role in disseminating information from a Tracking System in a locally-relevant manner.
