Overview

A key component of CEHTP is implementing a pilot project in Alameda County. This pilot project will serve as a "road test" of the environmental health tracking system, focusing on a small number of diseases and environmental hazards in Alameda County.  Information will be centralized, processed, and provided for use by public health officials and interested community groups.  Scientists with the California Department of Health Services and the California Environmental Protection Agency will be able to examine the data for "hot spots" of disease and relationships with environmental hazards, and to test hypotheses about these diseases.

Stakeholder participation process

CEHTP is holding a series of stakeholder input meetings through April 2005. At these meetings, methods and results of the pilot project are presented, and participants provide input regarding utility of the results and the best ways present and disseminate them.

Purpose of the stakeholder participation process

The participation process will help CEHTP to determine if Tracking can be useful to communities and for promoting public interests.  We will use input to create and disseminate pilot project materials in ways that are most accessible and useful to stakeholders.  Lessons learned from this process will also inform the planning of statewide and national tracking networks.  Without this participation, it will be difficult to create a tracking network that fulfills its potential as a resource for all organizations, particularly those that directly serve the community.

Composition of the stakeholder group

This group consists of representatives from CBOs, NGOs, and local governmental agencies from Alameda County, as well as representatives from statewide organizations who are familiar with and interested in county-specific environmental health issues.  These representatives are interested in maternal and child health, asthma, air pollution, and/or environmental justice in Alameda County.

Roles and responsibilities of the participating stakeholders

Participants attend meetings once every four months until April 2005, in which they review and discuss results and advise on the creation and dissemination of materials.  Additionally, participants may be asked to provide feedback on draft materials and project activities in between meetings.
